Faculty Development

As an Associate Member of EMBL, Australia can place up to two Group Leaders at EMBL laboratories at any one time.

EMBL offers a highly collaborative, uniquely international culture. It fosters top quality, interdisciplinary research by promoting a vibrant environment of young independent research groups with access to outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. 

Leaders for each group are recruited via the EMBL process. Each EMBL Group Leader package includes generous funding for the Group Leader with her/his research team. This includes one post-doctoral scientist and two PhD students selected by the EMBL International PhD program of the Group Leader's choosing.  

Groups are funded by external Australian grants (eg: NHMRC, ARC) and/or by Australian research institutions.

Each Group Leader will spend five years at an EMBL station in Europe, followed by four years at an Australian institution.
