The molecular life sciences and biomedical research can help address key challenges of society regarding human health, malnutrition, biodiversity and climate change, just to name a few. Considering their potential, they are heavily underfunded. I will introduce the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and give concrete examples of how EMBL scientists tackle some of these research challenges. Rather than engaging primarily in applied,”translational” research, EMBL scientists explore fundamental principles of life processes (“Learning from Life”) and generate a solid basis of knowledge for the quest for solutions. As EMBL’s first Associate Member State, Australia is directly partnered with these efforts.

Speaker: Professor Matthias Hentze
Director, EMBL, Heidelberg, Co-Director, University of Heidelberg Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit
