Professor Jose Polo has been appointed as the new Scientific Head of EMBL Australia.

A globally recognised leader in epigenetics and stem cell biology, Prof Polo brings extensive expertise and a passion for advancing molecular biology research, both within Australia and globally.

Professor Jose Polo is Program Lead in Cancer Epigenetics at SAiGENCI, Director of the Adelaide Centre for Epigenetics at the University of Adelaide’s School of Biomedicine and a group leader in Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Through his pioneering research, Professor Polo has made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of cellular reprogramming – the process by which cells transform into different types.

His work integrates cellular models, genomics, and computational approaches, driving advancements in stem cell science with far-reaching implications for both research and industry.

In 2016, he co-founded Mogrify Pty Ltd to translate cell reprogramming technologies into clinical applications, bridging the gap between discovery and real-world impact.

His global influence on the field was recognised in 2024, when he was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

Prof Polo said he was honoured to lead EMBL Australia’s Partner Laboratory Network

“It is an exciting opportunity to further engage with Australia’s vibrant scientific community, contribute to developing the next generation of life science leaders, and strengthen international collaboration between research infrastructures to tackle global health challenges,” he said.

Prof Polo was appointed following a competitive, merit-based process and succeeds Prof James Whisstock, who stepped down after eight years as Scientific Head of EMBL Australia at the end of 2024.
