Senior representatives from Australia’s national research infrastructures (RIs) visited EMBL sites in Europe to explore how shared platforms can accelerate discovery across biology, engineering and computation.

The 2025 Australian and European Health Research Infrastructure Symposium brought together Australian and international research infrastructure (RI) communities from health and the life sciences to strengthen international partnerships and tackle shared challenges.

Professor Peter Currie, Director of Research at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) at Monash University and EMBL Australia ARMI Institutional Representative, has been elected as an Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), in recognition of his scientific achievements in regenerative biology.

EMBL Australia group leader Dr William Roman & his team have launched a new imaging-based spatial transcriptomics platform that dramatically reduces experimental costs from more than $35,000 to approximately $30 per experiment, making spatial biology more accessible to researchers across Australia.

EMBL Australia Group Leader Dr Senthil Arumugam has co-launched the Monash BDI Advanced Bioimaging (MAB) platform – a researcher-led, global collaboration hub designed to bring innovative microscopy technologies directly to the researchers who need them.

In addition to translating discoveries to improve patients’ lives, our group leaders develop transformative tools for the scientific community. One such innovation is a freely available, ultracompact and highly sensitive 3D-printed microscope with the potential to revolutionise health diagnostics.

EMBL Australia group leaders are deeply integrated into Australian and international networks of excellence. They have established themselves as scientists and drive research and innovation in areas of national scientific priority.

In an era of transforming technologies in molecular sequencing, imaging, and artificial intelligence, there is an urgent need for skilled researchers who can bridge the gap between biomedical and computational sciences. Professor Eduardo Eyras is helping address that gap.
