EMBL Australia has been awarded $2 million under the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) 2025 Step Change funding to support its AusRISE training program.
AusRISE is Australia’s first research infrastructure (RI) fellowship program, designed to attract, train and retain talent in Australia, with the aim of building a globally connected workforce capable of tackling society’s largest scientific challenges.
The ambitious, three-tiered workforce development pilot program offers RI specialists unique training opportunities delivered in collaboration with the NCRIS Health Group, EMBL and other European RI partners. It recognises that workforce development involves multiple partners, nationally and internationally, helping build skills in data‑driven biology and emerging technologies.
EMBL Australia Scientific Head Professor José Polo said the program builds on strong existing relationships with European research infrastructures and will draw inspiration from EMBL’s successful ARISE program.
“The funding of AusRISE highlights the importance of investing in the next-generation of RI scientists and building the critical skills needed to work with increasingly complex biological data and technologies,” Prof Polo said.
“This will ensure Australia remains globally competitive in the life sciences.”
