We’re excited to announce that EMBL Australia Scientific Head Professor James Whisstock was today awarded an Australian Research Council Australian Laureate Fellowship.
James Whisstock MA (Cantab) PhD (Cantab) completed his Degree and PhD in the United Kingdom and moved to Australia in 1997 to establish his laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry at Monash University.
James’ group studies immunity, blood coagulation and developmental biology.
As Scientific Head of EMBL Australia (from 2016 to present), James has overseen the doubling in size of the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network over the past two years.
This expansion has included the recruitment of new EMBL Australia Group Leaders to the John Curtin School of Medical Research (ACT), the Garvin Institute (NSW) and QIMR Berghofer (Queensland).
In the context of his new Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship, James will develop in situ structural biology approaches to permit direct visualisation of macromolecular protein structures in the context of the cellular environment.
To achieve this outcome, James will study embryonic patterning in the fruit fly, Drosophila Melanogaster.
Congratulations, James on an outstanding achievement!
For more information about James’ project and the other 15 recipients, see the ARC media release.
