UPDATE: 9 June 2026
EMBL Australia welcomes the successful conclusion of negotiations for Australia’s association to Horizon Europe, opening new opportunities for international collaboration, mobility and participation in large‑scale research programs across Europe.
This is an exciting step for the Australian research community and will help strengthen connections between Australian and European researchers, institutions and research infrastructures.
We look forward to continuing to work with EMBL and partners across Australia and Europe to help maximise these opportunities for Australian researchers.

EMBL Australia welcomes the Australian Government’s decision to fast‑track negotiations to join Horizon Europe, recognising it as a transformative step that will expand global research collaboration and open new opportunities for Australian science.

Professor José Polo, EMBL Australia Scientific Head, said the momentum builds on more than a decade of partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), which has already enabled deep collaboration between Australian and European research communities through data exchange, shared training and joint scientific initiatives.
“Australia’s fast‑tracked pathway toward Horizon Europe comes at a moment when our long‑standing partnership with EMBL can make the greatest impact,” Prof Polo said.
“Since 2008, Australia’s association with EMBL has enabled the life science community to build trust and strong relationships that will be a strategic advantage in our country’s future access to Horizon Europe.
Australian institutions gain ready‑made entry points into major European consortia, a strong presence in global biodata and technology ecosystems, and a platform to attract and develop world‑leading researchers.
Access to Horizon Europe will amplify these strengths. It will enable our scientists to participate and lead large‑scale, cross‑disciplinary collaborations, shaping the future of molecular and life science research.
EMBL Australia, in collaboration with EMBL, has been proactively developing and exploring mechanisms to support Australian researchers’ engagement with Horizon Europe, and we remain committed to working with the broader Australian research community to ensure Australia’s participation is a success.”
